Natural Treatment for Lumbar Herniated Disc

About my Herniated Disc
Herniated Disc (aka Slip Disc) is a condition where one or more of your discs slip out of the spine (partially) and normally press against the sciatic nerve which goes down your leg. Sciatic nerve is the biggest nerve in the body. In most normal cases the sciatic pain caused by a slip disc can be anywhere between mild and extreme. In my case, it happened to be extreme and was the most pain I have experienced in my life. The pain in my calf of left leg was excruciating 10/10 when standing and sitting, while a low 2/10 while laying down.

Herniated Disc

I spent 4 weeks doing absolutely NOTHING but lying down on my back. Even basic tasks like taking a shower, having a meal, etc required me to take frequent breaks every 2-3 minutes and lie down on my back to "reset" the pain.

Unfortunately there is no treatment available for this condition. The only two options I was presented with are:

1. Surgerically remove the part of the disc that is pressing against the nerve.

2. Take steroid painkiller shots to reduce the pain and inflamattion, giving you relief from the pain.

I didn't want to go with any of these options as neither is natural.

I was presented with an alternative treatment in Ayurveda that claims to cure herniated discs. I was lucky to find a Kerela Ayurveda center in Edison, NJ and put together some strength to get there (30 minute drive). It was the best decision. The doctor there told me she will have me up and walking in just 3 days, but the treatment will continue for 21 days. It just sounded way too good to be true, but in my mind I was thinking even if it can bring down the pain from 10 to 6, I'll take it.

Sure enough 5 days later I was able to stand for longer, and sit for upto 30 minutes. By the end of the treatment which includes massages with different kinds of medicinal oils, for 21 sessions and I got back to almost being back to normal. Downside of Ayurveda in America is that the insurance doesn't cover it, and it is an expensive treatment. However, worth every penny.

I am grateful to all the people around me who took really good care of me when I was down, and all my friends who prayed for me and the staff at Santhigram Ayurveda center who worked hard to get me going.
